Northland FC (20 pts) entered the final match of the season just behind Real Overland Park (ROP, 21 pts), eager to solidify their standing in the inaugural Select League. Having suffered a disappointing defeat earlier in the season when they traveled to ROP, this rematch had been eagerly anticipated throughout the second half of the season. Arriving as one of only four clubs not to forfeit a match, Northland demonstrated resilience, despite being short an average of 10 players per game. This final, exhilarating match was no different, with Northland FC fielding just one substitute compared to ROP's four or five available substitutions.
ROP started strong, scoring within just 6 minutes and holding that lead for most of the first half. However, Northland FC responded with determination. Chris "Fish" Martin found the back of the net twice, first at the 29th minute and again at the 38th, giving Northland a 2-1 lead. Despite Northland's defensive composure, the midfield struggled to maintain control.
The second half saw ROP come out aggressively, quickly equalizing in the 48th minute and then taking the lead with another goal at the 55th minute. This left Northland trailing 3-2.
But the game was far from over. In the 60th minute, Chris Martin completed his hat trick, tying the match and earning the moniker "a true fish out of water." The game remained tense and lively, with players running low on energy, tensions rising, and both sidelines buzzing with chants and screams, urging Northland to secure a final goal.
As the clock ticked down, Northland FC pushed forward, taking every chance they could. However, as the final whistle blew, the reality set in: a hard-fought 3-3 draw. The result left Northland FC burried behind ROP in the standings, a tough pill to swallow after a promising start to the season. The weight of the missed opportunity was palpable, with players visibly emotional, feeling they had let down their fans, staff, and teammates.
Now, Northland FC looks toward the offseason with determination, aiming to return stronger. Training will resume every Tuesday at 7 PM at Happy Rock Park!
